in the "Heart of Denver" Designated as the Prospect Hill Cemetery by General William Larimer in 1858, Cheesman Park originally encompassed the current area, the Botanic Gardens region, nearby city water reservoirs and Congress Park. In 1890, the cemetery was relocated and the site was reclassified as Congress Park. German landscape architect, Reinhard Schuetze, created the park’s first design plan, completed after his death in 1910 by architect S. R. DeBoer. In honor of a donated pavilion, the park was renamed in 1909 as Cheesman Park after water baron Walter S. Cheesman. Colfax Avenue, Eighth Avenue, Josephine Street and Corona Street later became the park’s official boundaries.
